Item Alternatives in urban architecture through materials: Material exploration centre(AIKTC, 2019-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Shaikh, Aziz Azam (12ARC30)India, most of the cities (urban fringe) have lost or losing their traditional usage of materials & architecture. Cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, & Mumbai have lost their essence of traditional architecture in the past. Konkan region which also includes Mumbai as a major city also acts as a financial hub of country, stretches from Palghar (North of Mumbai) to the sindhudurg & some parts of Goa. Although, Konkan has some great traditional architecture, local artisan’s skills & its natural materials, it has not been blended into the urban frame of konkan divisions. Konkan is also associated with a very native local, common craftsmanship of people. Conserving the traditional method & merging or implementing with contemporary architecture into urban fringe, it will not only resemble traditional values but also give a characteristics to a city (urban area) lowering down carbon emissions in a sustainable way. By creating a research centre & a learning hub which not only encourages local building craft but aspire enhancement of traditional & cultural domain through architecture. In this thesis, emphasis has been given to the exploration of materials & how the prevailing condition of urban fringe can be developed with the help of alternative method in architecture & encouragement of participatory design process. This has also originated to provide a platform for urban & traditional artisans (labourers), developers, consultants, green building professionals, researchers, environmentalists, students & common public to allow development & interaction at local, national & international levels & celebrate native building craft. This alternative centre will also generate the awareness about the materials in urban & traditional context and also create healthy scepticism towards what is happening & what should have happened. This centre will also help in conservation of material palette knowledge & its applications also giving a sustainable development in this region.Item Anecdote: Past. Present. Future(AIKTC, 2017-11) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Bubere, Mukhbit (13ARC05)culture and it has a story to tell. The most visible source of our history is the Buildings and the Structures left behind by our Predecessors. Kalyan is no exception. A Century of industrialization & technical advancement brought forth rapid urbanization in the entire country, and more so near the metropolis such as Mumbai, Delhi, Calcutta etc. The city of Kalyan – Dombivali, owing to large urbanizable zone and its proximity to greater Mumbai forms one of the important urban agglomerations of Maharashtra state. . The smooth rail connectivity to greater Mumbai and being an important junction enabled a lot of influx of population, depending mainly on Mumbai for livelihood. The population influx lead to a tremendous pressure on the existing public services fabric of city. Thereby altering the fabric and making it like other characterless cities on the central line. Recently the smart city proposal surveys and mapping stated that Kalyan has a lot of potential into its long water front and that the city lacks Recreational and Public places. The City Development Plan aims to be “AN ECOFRIENDLY, HIGH-TECH, CULTURAL CITY”.Item Center for elderly(AIKTC, 2021-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Syed, Shahood Ahmed Waquar Ahmed (16AR21)In many countries including our country people who are more than 60 years of age are considered as senior citizen. But truly aging is not number of years one has lived. It is a characteristic of person which changes as years pass and those characters include changes in life expectancy, health, cognitive functions and other measures. The people who have worked for their whole life for themselves and their family do deserve peace in their final stage of their life. As modernization has increased the traditional family system has changed and along with this change there is growth in technology and social media. With these changes life of many of our senior and most valued member of our society has become more complicated. Why the sense of awareness has come to their mind that they have to secure their own future even if they have their own family? Many times, while moving around in our societies or in the areas where we live we see that many of these elderly people form their groups talking to each other sharing their life experiences which make them feel happy. Also, there are many elderly people who suffer a lot even in this stage of their life because of some health issues, family problems, financial problems, etc but they don't speak out loud. Why these people do not have a proper information about the external help which they can get? They also become socially inactive because of many reasons like losing their loved ones, getting retire from their jobs, losing their friends or because of some health concerns. All of these sudden changes in their life are difficult for them to accept. What can be the probable setup which will ease the disparity and make them feel the part of the community?Item DE-ADDICTION CENTER COLLABORATED WITH VOCATIONAL TRAINING AT YUSUF MEHERALLY CENTER(AIKTC, 2015-11) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Honnutagi, Fayazuddin A. (11ARC07)SYNOPSIS "Mumbai has traditionally been a conduit for the drug trade and consequently, the number of users here has always been large. The city also gets addicts from all over the country who check into rehabilitation facilities here. Nearly 10,000 drug users have gone in for de-addiction in Mumbai at some time or the other in last three years," said Dr Yusuf Merchant, a leading anti-drug crusader who has been working in the field for the last three decades. Over the last three years, Maharashtra has had the largest number of people registering for drugs de-addiction in the country. Drug addicts and alcoholics are mostly jobless or they are not concerned about their job, family, society, etc. And they tend to lead a stress full life. Due to which they get dependent on others and this leads to a direct impact on growth and development of nation in major aspects. Other then this accidents, crime rate, prostitution, HIV, etc. keep on increasing which is a great threat to society. Aim: Main aim of this thesis is to design a rehabilitation centre for alcohol and drug addicts with additional facility of vocational training which will improve their quality and standard of life and make them able to serve the society. Objectives: Designing a rehab which will cater increasing number of addicts from Mumbai and all over India, since the problem due to addiction is increasing year by year. Redesigning the existing vocational training centre of Yusuf Meherally centre as a part of recovery. Adding much advanced courses in training for a good response of outsiders. Creating an environment in rehabilitation centre which will help in recovering the patient as early as possible and lead a normal and stress free life. Collaborating the existing training centre at Yusuf Meherally with the rehabilitation centre so that it becomes part of treatment as well as a platform for interaction between patients with the society.Item Eternalizing the identity of Konkan in context of urban transformation(AIKTC, 2021-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Salaskar, Vaidehi (16AR19)The essence of a city manifest itself in the old parts of city. The Kath kuni style in Himachal, Pol houses in Gujarat, Havelis in Rajasthan, Wooden wada in Maharashtra , Red mud /stone Courtyard house in konkan all of these bring out the true character of the region. These are the traditional identity of the built place. Over time, these places experience a plethora of changes that influences the fabric of the region resulting in a multitude of varying responces to the influences. The fabric hence become the manifestation of different cultures, lifestyle, evolution, beliefs, indegineous knowledge and parallel processes of development.Item Ideal School(AIKTC, 2022-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Siddique, Mohd Tarik (16AR24)AroundAroundAroundAroundAroundAround1000 -800 BCEBCEBCEIndiaIndiaIndiaIndia hadhadhadone oneof the thebestbest besteducationeducationeducationeducationeducationeducationeducationeducationeducationsystemsystemsystemsystemsystemsystemfromfromfromfromaroundaroundaroundaroundaroundaroundthethetheworldworldworldworldworldwhichwhichwhich whichwaswaswasthe GurukulGurukulGurukulGurukulGurukulGurukulGurukulsystemsystemsystemsystemsystemsystem.IndiaIndiaIndiaIndia hashas seenseen seenNalandaNalanda NalandaNalanda Nalandaas oneoneoneof thethethegreatestgreatestgreatestgreatestgreatestgreatestgreatestgreatestcenterscenterscenterscenterscenterscenterscentersof lear learningin th eworld fromth e5thcentury C.E.To12 thC.E. These policies not even boosted the fabric demands but also gave an opportunity to industries to increase their grounds with respect to Fashion Technology. This industrialization is the reason for which recyclable yarn became a catalyst in the fashion technology. Power looms have modernized the tools and techniques of weaving but every aspect progresses with a bit of a disadvantage. Power looms are the sectors utilizing the largest amount of water than any other business sector In India. Due to which waste re-cycling is not a factor .This is due to the use of synthetic fibers over natural fibers. Handloom community recognizes different natural fibers in the process of spinning and weaving. Due to which in order for the material to remain safe and eco-friendly. Communities practicing natural dyeing and weaving have their own propaganda and principle respect towards their own material. Moreover, communities prefer mill-spun yarn over hand-spun yarn in order to reduce the time slot in manufacturing a product. Natural dyeing and weaving itself is an art which depends on the availability of resources in a particular area. That is the reason why different regions develop different variety of product from qualitative aspect. Being from different region yet “Ikat fabric” remains the most common sustainable product manufactured. When these tangible natural resources are converted into fabrics through long and tedious process, the final product remains astonishing. Keeping in mind the properties of these fabrics, which has a limited lifetime, is either re-used for an alternate purpose or re-cycled into some other product. These can be classified as preconsumer waste and post-consumer waste. Based on this segregation the re-cycling process for both the aspects are different. The products under pre-consumer waste are either utilize for a social cause or rather what industries prefer is re-selling. Irrespective of what the recycled product turns out to be, there is hardly a benefitting factor for the weavers and the artisans. The industries remain the primary benefited body and the consumers remains the secondary benefited body. Weaving community live by a principle factor of organizing their work with respect to art, science and social aspect.Item Re-inventing industrial mix use cluster in Bhiwandi(AIKTC, 2022-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Fakih, Abdur Rehman Shahab (17AR09)The textile industry is one of the very important industries in India. After China, India is the largest exporting and manufacturing country in the world. India shares 5 % of the global trade in textile industry and clothing. Powerlooms units on a small scale are the largest source of employment for millions of people in semi urban and rural areas and have a contribution of more than 75% of total textile production in the country. There are few major textile hubs in India which include Surat, Malegaon ,Bhiwandi ,Tirupur , Ludhiyana ,Varanasi etc. Textile Industry is one of the important sectors because of which Bhiwandi is renowned in India and the whole economy is run by the industry and has the largest number of power looms in the country. which is now resulting as a cause for disorganized/unplanned mix use. Since the last few years, It has been noticed that the industry is suffering from a lot of problems due to which it is not in its best possible condition. Due to these problems, the economic condition of the city is in a bad shape. This research attempts to study mixed use areas which have layers of the textile industry, involving various methods such as interviewing the user, mapping, documentation, open sources etc ; and rethink possibilities to develop it as an Industrial cluster which is a habitable model for Development of the city.Item Redevelopment of Kapadia market at Matheran(AIKTC, 2017-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Sayyed, ShaistaDuring Colonization a number of hill stations were developed at different locations all over the British India. One among these hill station is located just 87 km‟s from Mumbai which is Matheran. It is now the only pedestrian tourist hill station in Asia. One of the important activity in all of these hill stations was a local market of Matheran built after 1917. The market place was located on the lower street (King's Street) now Mahatma Gandhi Road to serve for the upper street now named Kasturba Gandhi Lane (Queen's Street) and other parts of the town. After Independence when Britisher's moved out it marked the beginning of transition of Matheran from a very exclusive use of the market to becoming a tourist attraction. The use of the market place and the street along the market place also started catering to tourists. So with time the built architecture has remained the same but the use has changed and therefore there is a need of ' Rethinking Market of Matheran'. This study aims at rethinking of market area In Matheran, which is very much known as a tourist spot. The study will try to understand the existing context and the specific needs of market place with respect to contemporary time. This study will also try to define the market place as the main element to strengthen the hill station. Rethinking “Market”, (a dynamic architectural space) to explore its concepts in contemporary time and it will strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the place.Item Relevance of fort in urban fabric(AIKTC, 2022-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Shaikh, Namira Rafiq (17AR31)Forts are such built masses that give us the consciousness of the past. One can never go out of the way while exploring history and heritage in each section of art, architecture, military, social, religious, economic. In search of the history there is always a clue of cultural, social, political, regional significance to the place and to the old built mass. People were so skilled without any source of technology. India had a long history that gave it a cultural and heritage value and forts are an important part of it. For more than 300 years many ruling powers have fought for it. But nowadays, in the Urban Fabric these forts have been neglected, lapsed, and absorbed by the intensifying urban sprawl. The significance of the forts keeps changing on the larger level but in the smaller context people still value their belongingness to such built masses. Adding to that in an interview it was quoted that Mahim fort is no longer a fort but a place for slum settlement. There would be many other forts surviving in the chaos of cities and town, as there would be some cultural, social, historical importance of the fort which might been neglected. It is important to investigate and understand the relation of such built mass in the urban city context surviving in the present condition. And to enhance and enrich the significance of fort for the betterment of the user living in and around the context of the urban area. Architecture critic Paul Goldberger writes in an article: “Architecture is all around us and what is all around us has to affect us. Architecture provides us continuity with the past and connects us.” The conclusions are based on study done in Chakan Pune, after studying and understanding forts and urban historical context. The current condition of Chakan and Sangramdurg was studied and determined using Mapping SWOT analysis. The results show the importance of providing an approach towards the Fort existing in the urban pressure.Item Sustaining the ethos of tribes in Madhya Pradesh(AIKTC, 2022-05) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Shekasan, Manaal Ayyub (17AR19)India is the homeland of many tribal communities. The major concentration of tribes lives in Central India and have a very significant presence. They also have played essential roles in the development of arts and crafts, agriculture, farming, sculptures, medicine, etc. In Madhya Pradesh, there are 46 registered Scheduled Tribes, which represent 21.1% of the state’s population, which is the highest rate in the country. Art life is deeply rooted in India still the artform of tribes is vanishing. The life of tribal people is something that is often misinterpreted asaloof. But these tribal communities are the roots of our old culture. Studying their lifestyle, activities and traditions through this research can help in bridging the gap between ancient and modern society. Visiting the tribal settlements and studying their lifestyle will give an understanding of their pattern of living through the observations and mappings. Analysis of the current situation and determining the concerns of tribal people through a series of interviews and surveys to highlight their issue. The scope lies in preserving the decline in the number of tribal communities and their vanishing life arts. This can allow tribal people to sustain their lifestyles. Spreading awareness among the people about the importance of tribal communities and how they play a role in balancing the ecosystem.Item Technical campus at Bhiwandi(AIKTC, 2017-11) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Momin, Mohammad Aktar Ata-UR-Rehman (12ARC19)The thesis topic basically emphasizes on campus designing the trends and innovation leading in campus designing today. In the old industrial land of south bombay, gleaming highrise now compete with chimney stacks in the urban skyline. The city skyline is commanded by towering skyscapper not by smoking chimney‟s. The social fabric of girgaon has collapsed and the physical artifacts and land of the industrial city are been dismantled. In the historic heart of Parel any new building built must reflect its very special context of Girgaon and connected life of people. Old existing mill structures are not only memorable and valuable enough to merit inclusion on the heritage list , but also stout enough to be recycled as work places for fashion designers studios for artists ,computer software engineers ,young graduates etc thus this thesis tries to come into being a new centre for Mumbai in the heart of the city with its own distinctive character, vitality and ambience – a centre which adds another dimension to this vital metropolis. An idea to preserve old mill architecture in form of new development of textile museum which will keep the culture of cotton mill alive. To bring the mill culture alive in this textile museum to showcast the history of city‟s textile industry .To convert the defunct mill into a sprawling textile museum and recreational spaces .To document the naration of life of the mill, the life of the mill workers ,their chawls , and the longer influence of mills on the city‟s growth. A representation of textile Bombay in this Mumbai‟s textile museum.Item Upliftment of Panvel vegetable market(AIKTC, 2017-04) Wadawalkar, Prajakta; Mhatre, Kshitija ManojkumarMarket plays a vital role for the traders as well as the people around. It is a common platform for buyers and sellers. In a wholesale market, the goods come from different parts of the state. It is equally important for local farmers whose produce is dealt in the market. Market is unique in its own way. Market hours begin with early morning and end till the goods get sold. The duration of market differs from place to place as well as it depends upon the commodity which is to be dealt. The market is located in Panvel. Market begins at midnight and shuts by afternoon, after which the market remains unused. This research aims at re-planning the market with respect to its function, services, hygiene and circulation. Also, planning an additional activity that will be carried out after the market hours which can keep the market alive after regular hours. Such plugging activity would invite other residents to the area and also would improve interaction.
